Even the offseason is a busy time for Derek Fisher, as the New York Knicks head coach explained in an exclusive sit-down interview with former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Kareem Rush and Bonnie-Jill Laflin of MUHO TV.

Fish talked at length about his coaching staff and his first season as a head coach in the NBA, while also touching on his biggest influence growing up: his dad. His father, John Fisher, instilled in him a work ethic that he carries with him to this day. And now as a coach, his goal is to put the same imprint on his Knicks teams.

“You always have access to good and great players, but what are you going to do with them once they’re a part of your team,” Derek said. “So we’re working on how we can develop the entire person. Not just shooing a bunch of jumpers and lifting a bunch of weights, but the character and the integrity of the person, because that’s what’s going to build the strongest team.”

In the 20-minute interview, D-Fish and Rush reminisced about the legendary 0.4 shot, to which Rush was an eyewitness as a member of the 2003-04 Lakers. Fish also told Rush and Laflin about his itinerary for the offseason, which includes as much family time as possible.

“My off time for me belongs to my kids,” Fish said. “So much time is put in on the job…The offseason revolves around trips to Disneyland, birthday parties, just trying to maximize time with them as much as possible.”
