Statement From Derek Fisher

In Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia, I suffered an injury to my patellar tendon. The recovery time will be approximately 2 weeks. With this news and the difficulty I have been having being away from my family I have asked the organization to waive me so I can return home.

Mark Cuban has been extremely supportive and has granted me this request. I cannot say enough good things about this organization. From Mark, to Coach Carlisle, to the players on the Mavericks team, I sincerely thank them for the opportunity. I have made decisions in the past, leaving money and opportunity on the table, and I will need to do that again. My family is my priority and that is where I choose to be.

I won’t close the possibility that I will play again, however, for now my family and being close to them remains the priority.

Your decision is awesome, Fisher. Having your family first than anything else, show us how a wonderful man you are. As a fan, I’ll wait for your return. Meanwhile, enjoy your family.

Derek, it is the working men like you that have made possible the sucess and titles of many NBA teams throughout the years. The “stars” get the glory, but people like you made it happen! God bless you and your family, a speedy recovery, and thanks for the years of memories!

    D Fish,

Just wanted to say thank you for all of the years in the league and college. I have been following you since UALR and you have always been an awesome reminder of how money and success doesn’t change a man, but can make them stronger.

You are a leader in life and on the court and I respect your decision to be with family…but as a a Mavs fan…I WANT YOU BACK!

Once, again thank you for being a role model for so many people, young and old, and I strongly feel you will go down as one of the best PG in the league. Congrats on everything you have accomplished and wish you and yours the best in all future endeavors.

    -Chris
